Kia Ora

This issue is coming to you a week early – we would usually send it on the first Monday on the month following the Neighbour Liaison Group meeting on the last Thursday of the previous month but, with the way the dates fall in the week, that has already happened so we’re getting this info to you now.

The next issue will be even earlier. The Theatre site and our respective organisations will be closed for business over the Xmas-New Year period, so we’ll be sending the next Update on Thursday 16 December, which will cover the work planned through to the end of January.

With the move to Covid Level 2, significant milestones have been achieved in preparing the site for the construction of the Theatre. Site demolition works has moved forward quickly, such that some of the buildings are now gone and the ‘soft stripping’ of the Hamilton Hotel is underway.

The construction management plans continue to be developed and submitted to Council for approval.

The Developed Design plan has been signed off, allowing the next round of planning workstreams to kick off, with the Foundation, Civil Consent and Shear Wall plans being bundled together as the first priority.

Progress on Site

November has seen the Demolition Phase get well underway with the following works.

  • Demolition of the three shops between Embassy Park and the old Hamilton Hotel, plus the cottage behind them.

  • ‘Soft stripping’ of heritage items from the Hotel.

  • Replacement of footpath outside Embassy Park for construction traffic.

  • Streetlight modifications.

  • Realignment of the central-median car parks on Victoria St.

Significant Events in the Next Month

With the summer holidays fast approaching, the following works have been identified as achievable by Christmas.

  • Removal of footpath canopies around Hamilton Hotel

  • Installation of support system for the Hotel’s façade.

  • Continuation of demolition works inside the Hotel, including asbestos removal.

  • Removal of the ‘Pink House’ at the back of the site.
