Welcome to the Waikato Regional Theatre Construction Update for March 2022.
The various moving parts of the Theatre project have over the last month seen Management Plan submissions made, demolition site work continue with asbestos removal, and active engagement with the mana whenua and Heritage New Zealand.
Initial heritage monitoring of removal of the concrete slab from the now-demolished ‘Pink House’ at the back of the site took place last Friday, 4 March, with mana whenua and Heritage New Zealand representatives in attendance.
Note the formal ‘Demolition phase’ of the project timeline has been extended to June, recognising a more likely timing of final demo work at the rear of the Hotel after the erection of the façade retention frame on Victoria Street.
Progress on Site
Despite the surge of Omicron cases around the country, this has not affected the momentum of site progression.
February 2022 saw the achievement of the following items.
Continued soft strip of heritage hotel building.
Roof removal of the apartment block.
Heritage hotel portion asbestos removal.
Structural intrusive works.
Acoustic fence constructed to northern boundary of Embassy Park.
Significant Events in the Next Month
The following items are set to be achieved in March.
Removal of existing concrete slabs commenced 4 March.
Roof asbestos-encapsulation wrap to be removed week of 7 March.
Apartment block structural demolition commences week of 7 March.
Rear portion of heritage hotel demolition to follow apartment block demolition.
Façade retention piles and pile caps commences week of 14 March.

Foundations June 2022 – September 2022
Structure October 2022 – February 2023
Envelope January 2023 – April 2023
Fit-out March 2023 – February 2024
Completion March 2024.
