Teenaa koutou and welcome to September’s Waikato Regional Theatre Construction Update.

Progress on site continues, including earthworks, heritage basement strengthening activities, demolition and asbestos removal works, with the final few structural components for the façade retention being installed.

The piling works are now well and truly underway – the team are utilising an innovative technology called ‘deep soil mixing’, rather than driving long piles, which would cause a lot of noise and vibration.

The demolition phase continues with the last of the sections soon to be removed at Sapper Moore-Jones Place.  Asbestos continues to be found in several locations within the existing structure and is being removed in accordance with the site’s asbestos management plan.

 

Progress on Site

August saw the achievement of the following works.

  • Further asbestos removal.

  • Ongoing demolition.

  • Completion of shoring of the heritage hotel’s retained level 1 slab.

  • Completion of ground retention infrastructure installation and start of piling works.

  • Continuation of Stage 1 excavations.

  • Completion of façade retention frame, with the final components being installed.

  • Relocation of Victoria St hoardings to form slip lane.

  • Continuing construction of heritage basement foundations.

  • Completion of basement waterproofing.

 

Significant Events in the Next Month

The following is set to be achieved in September.

  • Demolition of the northern end of the Hamilton Hotel.

  • Completion of the Stage 1 excavations.

  • Completion of the basement propping.

  • Shotcrete applied to the basement walls.

  • Removal of the remaining asbestos and contaminated soil.

  • Completion of new concrete floors, walls and structural steel for heritage basement.

The project is currently tracking as per dates below, note some amendments to previous editions.

  • Site set-up          August – October 2021

  • Demolition          November 2021 – September 2022

  • Earthworks         June – October 2022

  • Foundations       October 2022 – January 2023

  • Structure             November 2022 – March 2023

  • Envelope             January – April 2023

  • Fit-out                  March 2023 – May 2024

  • Completion        June 2024.
